FOR MANY OF his fans, Paul Reubens primarily existed as his defiantly ageless alter ego, Pee-wee Herman—a postmodern Peter Pan whose playhouse was his Neverland and whose costume was a too-short glen plaid suit with a red bow tie. Stare too long, and he’d likely quip, “Why don’t you take a picture? It’ll last longer.” His chirpy cheerfulness and hyperactively childlike enthusiasms made Peewee a cult hero spanning generations.
