Gunsmoke Noon/11am c, Decades Retro Pick John Wayne introduced the longest-running Western series’ first episode on September 10, 1955; his bit begins this massive marathon reliving Gunsmoke’s start. James Arness (below) played Marshal Matt Dillon for 20-plus years with stalwart consistency. (William Conrad had the radio role.) The shoot-outs are memorable, but it’s Dillon standing his ground that resonates. “You won’t hold me in jail,” a killer tells him. “Let’s go find out,” Matt replies.
