While I’m fine with HBO’s different take on Perry Mason, I have to wonder why, why, why didn’t they revive what is, for my money, one of the Top 10 instrumental themes in TV history?

MATT ROUSH: Seems to me that like every other decision made involving this revisionist origin story, removing the theme is meant to provide distance from the iconic original series. You hear Fred Steiner’s snazzy, jazzy and boldly authoritative music, you’ll conjure an image of a Perry Mason who doesn’t yet exist in the world of this show. The Perry played by Matthew Rhys lacks the agency and confidence projected by Raymond Burr, and perhaps in a future season, if there is one, he’ll earn the right to that classic theme.…
