I HAD TO laugh this summer when Billy Eichner, of Hulu’s wacky Difficult People, griped, “When did comedies become halfhour dramas?” He has a point, up to a point. Many comedies, especially on cable and streaming, have gone darker, eschewing jokiness to tackle more sobering truths.
Two terrific new FX dramedies (for lack of a better word) walk this fine line with unusual finesse, peppering their personal visions with skewed humor that only occasionally qualifies as laugh-out-loud.
Donald Glover’s Atlanta is steeped in an urban hard-knocks authenticity, starring actor-musician-creator Glover as sheepishly down-on-his-luck Earn, who can barely afford a fast-food kids’ lunch, let alone support…
