The foul language and frequent use of the F-bomb are uncalled for, especially by the older characters and the president. Here’s a little-recalled fact about that distant day, 50 years ago, when human beings triumphantly first landed on the moon. Astronaut Neil Armstrong, piloting Apollo 11’s spider-like lunar module (LM) built for the descent, touched down on the moon’s surface on July 20, 1969, at 3:17pm Houston time. Meanwhile, CBS television had already been there for about 20 seconds. “Yes, CBS ‘landed’ on the moon before the astronauts did,” explains the network’s then correspondent and coanchor David Schoumacher, recalling the premature broadcast of landing animations. “CBS could time it exactly to the flight plan but since [the LM flight was delayed], CBS landed…and the astronauts were still saying, ‘Three seconds, two seconds.…’” Even with a glitch, the live coverage of Apollo 11’s journey remains the most spectacular show in television…

That’s likely to be the case with former Emmy champs Game of Thrones—yes, even after that controversial final season—and Veep, whose endgames on HBO are almost certain to dominate their respective fields when the Emmy nominations are announced July 16. APOLLO 11 DOCUMENTARY SATURDAY, JULY 20 “There’s a reason Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins are American Society of Cinematography members,” says filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller, director of the exhaustively researched documentary Apollo 11. “They shot the most iconic pieces of cinema in history.” For their 1969 mission to the moon, the three men were trained not only as astronauts, but also as filmmakers. “Buzz Aldrin filmed the lunar module landing sequence with a 16mm camera pointed outside the left window,” Miller says. “It’s exhilarating.” He and his team had unprecedented access to NASA and National Archives footage to create the film, which spans several days before, during and after the historic moon landing.
