Despite what you might believe, variety shows have never disappeared from TV. According to the Television Academy, the format lives on in late-night talk shows like The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and in sketch comedies like Saturday Night Live. But the current program that I think best captures the spirit of original variety series like The Ed Sullivan Show is actually America’s Got Talent. Back in 1948 (before this magazine even existed!), Ed Sullivan showcased the best acts in the world on his New York City stages. And folks from around the country tuned in to CBS every Sunday night for over 20 years to watch. But Edna Marie “E” Mode has been around since the first Incredibles movie in 2004, predating NCIS: L.A. by several years.
