Police crime dramas have been around nearly as long as TV has. The first shows, like Dragnet, set up the procedural rules (the good guys always win). Later shows, like Hill Street Blues, broke those rules (sometimes the good guys are not that good after all). More recently, procedurals have had a resurgence, practically taking over primetime—think the NCIS, Chicago and Law & Order franchises. Most are pretty darn serious. RYAN MURPHY HAS about 300 million new reasons to be gleeful. Over the past two decades, the producer has conquered numerous TV genres including teen, true crime, horror and, this year, procedurals, with his latest Fox hit, 9-1-1. Now he’s leaving the broadcast networks behind to make his mark in the streaming world. On February 13, Netflix announced that it had signed a deal with Murphy— estimated to be worth upward of $300 million—which kicks in on July 1 and grants the streaming service exclusive rights to his upcoming projects for five years. He’ll be in good company: Former ABC producer Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal) recently joined its roster as well. Despite dominating primetime with its coverage of the first week of the PyeongChang Games, NBC’s broadcast of the opening ceremony on February 9 only landed a bronze compared to past taped-delayed Winter Olympics kickoffs. Sunday Fun Day In the Sunday-morning news race, viewership for NBC’s Sunday Today With Willie Geist is up 18 percent since the same period a year ago, in part thanks to Olympics coverage. Rise SERIES PREMIERE Tuesday, March 13, 10/9c, NBC THEY LOOK LIKE typical students on a class field trip. The young cast members of NBC’s new high school musical drama Rise have naturally formed two lines as they walk across the show’s Brooklyn set to the canteen. They sound, however, very different from your average teenagers. One of the actors is belting out “Mama Who Bore Me” from the Tony-winning show Spring Awakening. Little Big Shots SEASON PREMIERE 7/6c, NBC Steve Harvey is a man of many skills…including, it seems, the ability to walk on water. On NBC’s hit kid variety show Little Big Shots, the MC defies gravity thanks to the help of a 7-year-old science aficionado. The result is “phenomenal,” promises executive producer Alison Holloway. That stunt is just one of many impressive acts on Season 3. To curate the most eye-popping crop yet, Holloway and her team broadened their search. “We have gone to every corner of the planet to find these children,” she says.
