THERE MAY NOT be a better neighbor than Fred Rogers. The beloved Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, famous for its host changing out of his coat and shoes and putting on a comfy sweater and slippers, celebrates its 50th anniversary on February 19. In an era when much of children’s TV was manic, derivative or cartoonishly violent, Rogers stood out like a calm, friendly, reassuring beacon. From its 1968 premiere on National Educational Television until its finale on PBS in 2001, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood bolstered kids’ self-image, ignited their curiosity, taught them the most basic of concepts (up and down, happy and sad) and always encouraged simple kindness. Rogers invited viewers into his home, took them on tours to exotic locations real and imaginary and discussed topics that spanned from bathroom drains…

One Day at a Time Netflix In case you haven’t noticed, we really, really want you to watch this reboot of Norman Lear’s 1970s classic. One reason: Justina Machado’s funny, sad, bubbly, teary, sensitive, tough performance as single mom Penelope, a nurse raising her two kids while living in a tiny California apartment with her conservative Cuban mother, Lydia (Rita Moreno). (Yes, we’re aware of all those adjectives. She’s that good.) In the comedy’s current second season, Penelope gets intimate with a hot EMT (yay!) who wants more babies (nay!). Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. 10/9c, USA HOW I BECAME TUPAC Marcc Rose was aware, when he signed on to star as iconic “All Eyez on Me” rapper Tupac Shakur, that all eyes would be, well, on him. “It comes with all the pressure in the world,” Rose says of portraying the late hip-hop star and actor in the limited series Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. “But a little pressure never hurts, right?” The Brooklyn native was nervous, even though the role is familiar territory: His only other screen credit is a small role as Shakur in the 2015 N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. My wife and I think the leads are excellent and the subplots interesting. —Jeffrey MATT ROUSH: Maybe it’s easier to take even the better costume dramas for granted on PBS’s Masterpiece, whereas a “cool” factor tends to attach to just about anything on Netflix. Actors and producers headed south earlier this month for a series of panels and screenings at the sixth annual Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) aTVfest in Atlanta. The Good Doctor Returns Monday, Feb. 26, 10/9c, ABC MAYBE IT SHOULD be called The Great Doctor. ABC’s warmhearted drama starring Freddie Highmore as an autistic surgical resident has cemented its spot as the unquestionable smash of the current television season. The series finished 2017 as the fourth-highest-rated scripted show. But this is no fall fluke. Coming back from its winter hiatus, The Good Doctor continues to earn massive primetime Monday ratings (9.63 million viewers on February 5), making it the alphabet network’s biggest hit on the night in 21 years.
