After I watch a show that excites me, the first thing I want to do is talk about it! But I spend a lot of time searching for friends, relatives and even fellow magazine staffers who’ve seen the show at the same time I did and are ready to share their thoughts. Maybe they recorded it for later. Or maybe they plan to stream it in the next few days, or even watch it much later on Netflix or Amazon. It’s fantastic that we have so much choice in how and when we watch, but a big drawback to that is one less shared experience where people can get together and talk about TV in our increasingly fragmented world. The X-Files 8/7c, Fox Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) have spent much of Season 11 of The X-Files suspicious of their longtime boss, FBI Assistant Director Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), and things reach a boiling point tonight when he suddenly goes MIA. (Is he hanging out with the Cigarette Smoking Man?) But the hour will at least give the audience a clearer picture of Skinner, with a deep-dive into his backstory, complete with flashbacks to his pre- X-Files life. I think Claire Foy and Matt Smith are perfect as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in The Crown. So I was disappointed to read that there will be new actors in Season 3 because the characters will be older now. Why can’t they “age” the actors, as other shows and movies do? WHEN A CABLE network changes its name or content, it’s almost always to appeal to a different, wider audience. Take The Nashville Network. TNN began on March 7, 1983, as a country music and lifestyle alternative to MTV, which had launched two years earlier. Then in 2000, TNN kept its initials but rechristened itself The National Network, making room for classic series, wrestling, arena football and other “national” attractions. In 2003, TNN became Spike TV, aimed at young males and airing shows like Bar Rescue and the competition series Lip Sync Battle.
