Fall means three things: Clear skies, crisp air and a new television season. Since 1953, TV GUIDE MAGAZINE has been commemorating every new season with our Fall Preview issue, and this year we’re celebrating how special these annual guides are, starting with the cover. We looked back at all of our past Fall Preview issues for inspiration. “Fall Preview is our signature, annual event—our Oscars, our Emmys— so I wanted to create a cover design that captured that. Something special for our readers,” says Design Director Kevin Newman. “I used gold in the type to reflect that we’re the gold standard, and will continue to be, when it comes to TV guidance.” We worked on various designs and narrowed them down to two— and we liked them so much we…

The good news about this year’s Emmy Awards: Many fresh faces and breakout series were included in the festivities. The flip side: For those trying to handicap the winners in an always unpredictable and increasingly crowded field, it’s more of a crapshoot than ever. (See the Emmy ballot on page 12.) DRAMA The feuding families of Game of Thrones aren’t competing (the show didn’t air during this year’s eligibility period), opening the door for five freshman series to battle against veteran nominees Better Call Saul and House of Cards. COMEDY PREMIERES Sept. 25, 8:30/7:30c, CBS (moves to Thursdays, 8:30/7:30c, on Nov. 2) @YoungSheldon IF YOU EVER wondered what The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper was like as a child, the new prequel Young Sheldon has your answer. The heartwarming sitcom is set in 1989 East Texas, when the 9-year-old socially awkward genius (Big Little Lies’ Iain Armitage) is just starting high school. “Sheldon is still very much an outsider,” executive producer Steven Molaro explains. “At one point he’s asked if he’s having trouble fitting into high school and his response is, ‘I have trouble fitting into Earth.’ ” Family life with his parents, older brother and twin sister also poses a challenge for the brainiac. ABC’s original S.W.A.T. caught a break by debuting in February 1975. It was the most violent drama on TV when the FCC began pushing producers for more PG fare. That summer, the agency enforced its “family viewing hour,” requiring networks to air “safer” programing before 9pm. Executives tore up their new fall schedules. Writers rejiggered scripts. But in ABC’s Ten Days in the Valley, she finds herself on the other side of the yellow tape. The Emmy winner plays Jane, a high-strung TV producer whose young daughter is abducted. “It’s a who- and why-dunit,” says Sedgwick. “It’s also a psychological thriller about truth. NBC is bringing back Will & Grace this season—which was famously a part of their Must See TV campaign, used to brand lineups that included their biggest hits. NBC’s first Must See TV lineup was definitely worth staying home for. On Thursdays in 1993, you only needed to use the remote once: to turn on your television at 8/7c. Mad About You, Wings, Seinfeld, Frasier and L.A. Law filled the entire night. Eventually, Friends took over for Mad About You; Frasier (and later Will & Grace) replaced Seinfeld; and ER was ultimately scheduled at 10/9c. But throughout the years, less-than-perfect shows started to sneak into the three-hour block—The Single Guy in 1996? Daddio in 1999? Inside Schwartz in 2001? Meh. It was the best of primetimes, it was the worst of primetimes—depending on whether you liked watching soaps. After Dynasty’s January 1981 debut, King’s Crossing and Falcon Crest joined the post-8pm lineup in the fall of 1981, but only the latter survived. If backstabbing and hairpulling weren’t your thing, procedurals were also on trend that season. Some were good: TVGM loved the brotherly charm of Simon & Simon. SCI-FI PREMIERES Friday, Sept. 29, 8/7c (moves to 9/8c on Oct. 6), ABC @theinhumans AMERICANS LOVE SHOWS about royalty and superheroes, so it was just a matter of time before someone brought this hybrid of the two to life. Enter Inhumans, the latest comic book adaptation in Marvel’s sprawling film and TV universe. The series, whose twohour premiere debuts in theaters September 1, focuses on the ruling class of a superpowered race living in a hidden city on the moon. “The concept is really far out there,” executive producer Scott Buck admits. Chances are you were familiar with S.W.A.T. and Dynasty when the networks announced them as new series for this fall. Perhaps you’ve also heard of The Jetsons, The Munsters and Miami Vice? These classic TV hits could be among the “new” offerings for next season. As we dig into this year’s fresh crop of shows, the networks are already hard at work developing Fall 2018, and early signs point to schedules chockfull of more familiar names and faces. FOUR-TIME EMMY winner Edie Falco is back on television— and she’s laying down the law. In NBC’s Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, she plays flame-throwing defense attorney Leslie Abramson, whose unbridled passion and mop of unruly blonde curls made her a media favorite (à la Marcia Clark) during the notorious Menendez brothers trial of 1993–94. This limited series—the first installment in a planned trilogy— follows the case of siblings Lyle and Erik (played by Miles Gaston Villanueva and Gus Halper), who were sentenced to prison for life without parole for the murders of their wealthy parents, Jose (Carlos Gómez) and Kitty (Lolita Davidovich). WHEN IT CAME to finding the lead for the new CBS military drama SEAL Team—which follows an elite Navy squad as they juggle dangerous missions in the field and their normal lives at home—producers needed someone with great strength and enormous vulnerability to portray unit leader Jason Hayes. ACTION PREMIERES Nov. 2, 10/9c, CBS @swatcbs “SLOW” AND “SAFE” aren’t words normally associated with real-life police Special Weapons and Tacticals (S.W.A.T.) teams. So why should a TV series about a contemporary Los Angeles S.W.A.T. unit be any different? This reimagining of the hit 1975 drama and its 2003 film adaptation kicks right off with big action and even some controversy. Criminal Minds vet Shemar Moore stars as S.W.A.T. sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. This Hondo is nothing like his gruff, tough-talking predecessors, played by Steve Forrest on TV and Samuel L. Jackson in the film. Born and bred in the city, Hondo understands its people and its streets. We’ll take credit where it’s due. In September 1998, TV GUIDE MAGAZINE predicted that Will & Grace would be a hit, thanks to “snappy dialogue” and a “screamingly funny” cast. We had lots to pick from too: 36 new series debuted in the fall alone. Our shows to watch included Charmed, Felicity, That ’70s Show and The King of Queens. Even the flops weren’t complete failures. Conrad Bloom and Cupid starred Mark Feuerstein and future Emmy winner Jeremy Piven, both back this season in 9JKL and Wisdom of the Crowd, respectively. But TVGM doesn’t always have killer instincts.
