Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) is a venture-capitalist-style non-profit which supports the conservation of Africa's wildlife through species-specific grant funding. Perhaps best-known for the Lion Recovery Fund, their portfolio extends to elephants, pangolins and rhinos. Now, painted dogs are also joining their ranks, with a new fund created specifically for their conservation in partnership with the Painted Wolf Foundation (PWF).
Known variously as African wild dogs, painted dogs or painted wolves, only 6500 of these persecuted predators survive across the continent. Each having uniquely patterned coats, they live in packs with fascinating social dynamics led by their alpha female, but they are threatened by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, snaring, traffic and declining prey numbers.
