I often say that elephants are just like humans, but even more so. They have everything we feel proud of as humans – empathy, trust, dignity, language, ability to think in the past, present and future, compassion – but elephants have none of the war, cruelty and inhumanity we exhibit daily.
One example is a time we were watching a herd of elephants drinking at a waterhole, and a baby fell and was suctioned into the mud. They rallied quickly and delegated duties: one to break the bank, another to trample a ramp, one to lift the baby from the mud with her tusks.
