AESTHESIS Greece There are only 12 rooms attached to the main building of this sprawling new addition to the Athenian Riviera, just 30 minutes from downtown Athens. The rest of the accommodations are freestanding suites, residences, villas, and, in tribute to the resort’s origins as the Asteria beach club, bungalows designed by K-Studio and others. All those bungalows have private pools and some offer direct access to the sea, with decks right on the water. “Is it architecture?” Frank Lloyd Wright famously asked of Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. Seventy-five years later there’s no question. Today this midcentury minimalist temple stands as one of the greatest beacons of 20th-century design, the anchor of a 49-acre, 14-building modernist mecca, visited annually by more than 13,000 devoted pilgrims, that embodies Johnson’s entire biography in its breadth and contradictions. In the Glass House’s nearly 20 years as a museum, though, there was one corner of the grounds, just 80 feet from the Glass House, that was off-limits: a 900-square-foot bunker-like structure where Johnson lived with his partner, curator David Whitney, while he worked on his Connecticut compound. The 19th-century English-American painter Thomas Cole was obsessed with how things evolve and decay. An opponent of the Industrial Revolution, he revered the natural world. When you arrive in Irene Neuwirth’s neighborhood in La Quinta, California, it’s immediately clear which home belongs to the jewelry designer, who is known for her command of color. Hers is the only property in view that is not beige brick with beige stucco accents. Ignoring the strictures of the homeowner association, she painted the one-story house a soothing Spanish white.
