The naming of yachts is a frivolous matter, as T.S. Eliot never wrote. It’s really just one of those superrich games. And, good heavens, the one-percenters are a derivative gang. Research from Boat International shows that the most popular superyacht names are banal (Spirit, Escape, Destiny, Serenity), egomaniacal (My Way), pretentious (Carpe Diem, Aurora), or Italian (Dolce Vita, Andiamo). With crashing inevitability, the winning name is Freedom—the nautical equivalent of calling your dog Fido.
Apart from horses, boats are the only form of transport named by their owners, which somehow befits the one means of conveyance commissioned by the foot, as it allows (and encourages) direct comparison with one’s, shall we say, ambition.
