1961 FAST BREAK The Aga Khan, whose father was once married to Rita Hayworth, was captured racing down the powdered slopes of Gstaad for a story on “the European ski explosion.” He inherited his title from his grandfather in 1957 at the age of 20 and went on to become a billionaire magnate and racehorse collector. Two marriages produced four children—son Hussain is a T&C bachelor this year (page 90). In case you’re wondering, the Aga Khan, now 81, is also single.…
Often, when I’m at dinner with my friend the jeweler and photographer Monica Rich Kosann, her daughters Laura and Danielle come up. “The girls” are the founders of the food and style website the New Potato, and they have grown it, through smart strategy and a healthy dose of pure moxie, into an impressive business. So we talk about that, and sometimes their love lives, as well as Kosann’s impending grandmotherhood. But Monica also makes a point of telling me that when the girls visit her in Connecticut, her Town & Countrys always go missing. She knows just what to say. Few things are as important to a 171-year-old magazine as maintaining fans across generations. And there they all were at a series of T&C celebrations in Los Angeles this…
ALESSANDRA STANLEY In introducing “THE T&C 50 BACHELORS” (page 90), the New York Times writer laments the decline of the gentleman. “I feel bad for today’s single women. Blessed are those who came of age before Tinder and twitchy ‘send’ fingers.” MICHAEL JOSEPH GROSS “Americans often underestimate the personal connection that exists between monarchs and subjects,” says Gross, who writes about the rise in romantic unions between royals and nonroyals in “COMMON DENOMINATORS” (page 98). “The new wave of marriages between them deepens this connection.” LESLEY M.M. BLUME “I’ve been curious about Sarah Paulson for years,” says Blume, who interviewed the actress for “AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY” (page 82). “She disappears into her roles so completely, yet in person I found her candid, curious, and sharply funny.” JESSICA PRESSLER “The thing…
SOCIAL NETWORK PEOPLE, PLACES, AND PARTIES One day in the early 2000s, Ivanka Trump invited Jamie Johnson—and a video camera—to tour her Trump Tower bedroom. The heiress and the heir (she to her father’s real estate empire, he to the Johnson & Johnson fortune) were friends, so when Johnson began casting Born Rich, his documentary about inherited wealth, which came out 15 years ago this month, Trump was a natural fit. In that particular scene, Trump—then 21 and a Georgetown student—walks Johnson around her room, a pastel-painted palace with Beverly Hills, 90210 posters on the walls and sweeping views of Central Park. “No matter what I hear about my parents, about my family,” she says, in the same measured cadence she uses today, “I’m absolutely proud to be a Trump.”…
There’s plenty to see at the Grill, the new tenant of the former Four Seasons space in Manhattan, but it’s not only the famous beaded curtains or the theatrically presented prime rib, carved tableside, that catches the diner’s eye. The restaurant is serving a striking appetizer of crudités—garden-fresh veggies in an oversize silver bowl alongside a trio of tasty dips—that is giving new life to the formerly sleepy staple. And similar upgrades are happening all over. Across town, the Office—the first New York offering from the Alinea Group—is serving seasonal vegetables with a bavarois; in Chicago the just-opened Gibsons Italia has a crudités and herb dip appetizer; in Los Angeles, Wolfgang Puck offers a superlative version at the Hotel Bel-Air, and Instagram-friendly Silver Lake eatery Botanica serves its crudités with…
