But when we mark life events and relationships through craft, we’re not only enjoying a hobby, we’re taking part in a centuries-old tradition, intertwined with the female experience. For any traditional craft to thrive and survive, skills need to be passed on to new makers who can then share the knowledge they acquire further down the line. As well as working to safeguard and promote traditional crafts, the national charity Heritage Crafts (www.heritagecrafts.org.uk) keeps a list assessing the viability of the UK’s heritage crafts. Currently, patchwork and quilting are considered to be: “… in a healthy state and have sufficient craftspeople to transmit the craft skills to the next generation.” However, there is a caveat that being “currently viable” does not mean there will definitely be no issues affecting a craft’s future success, such as a lack of opportunities to learn, costs of materials and tools, and so on. BEHIND THE QUILT A SCRAPBUSTING TECHNIQUE! “This miniature quilt project uses shadow appliqué; shapes are glued in place, a transparent fabric is laid over the top and the design is quilted. This is a quick and easy technique that enables you to produce a small-scale design without having to fuse or appliqué each shape individually. The glue holds the pieces in position, the net ensures the design is secure and the quilting fixes it all in place. BEHIND THE QUILT PRACTICE YOUR FPP! “We have included in our FPP papers all the sections to make the cushion, so all you need to do is sit yourself down and give it a go! “The cut sizes for FPP often are listed as basic shapes like rectangles, squares, etc, which might seem strange when the pattern has pointy triangles or diamonds, but that’s the whole reason for using a technique like this. No cutting difficult angles or fiddly piecing, just super accurate sewing! This pattern is worked using a sewing machine, but you can in fact hand sew FPP as a technique. INSPIRATION Have you ever started creating and thought, “Oh, this is so similar to that other piece I made”? Do you tend to gravitate to the same shapes, colours and themes? If you are like me, the answer to both questions is YES! I had been making art quilts for three years before I realized that a lot of my quilts had circles in them. I can tell you now that, as a new appliqué quilter, creating and stitching a perfect circle is a pain, if not downright impossible, so why did I continue to make circles?
