Australian quilt designer, Deirdre Bond-Abel, has been on a mission to decorate her entire house with quilts for four decades now. “It all started with the purchase of a magazine – American Country Living. The houses in the photographs were full of quilts – on beds and on and over every surface. I knew instantly that I had to learn how to make a quilt so I could create a similar look in my own home,” she recalls. At the time, there weren’t many patchwork and quilting stores in Australia but, fortunately for Deirdre, one had recently opened in her local shopping centre. Improv quilting can be a frightening proposition for many quilters. Improvised quilts are often made without intention or concept, but just grow and develop as the quilter stitches. BEHIND THE QUILT HEXAGON WAVE “This quilt was inspired by some old hand-pieced, but unfinished, quilts and samples. The hexie tops have been sewn by hand without the papers that tend to be associated with this shape. For me, cutting out the paper basting stage gave me a hand-piecing project that needed minimum equipment. The scrappy nature of the main rosettes also meant that it could be quite mindlessly stitched with no worry about patterns or fussy-cutting. “The colour scheme was inspired by a fabric bundle of Janet Clare’s collection, The Wordsmith, which I adore. I paired it with scraps from my stash and scattered the collection throughout the rosettes. INSPIRATION What’s the right batting for a project? There are as many answers to that question as there are quilters, so I am not one to subscribe a brand of batting to use. But I am always open to sharing batting experiences with my students and why I use what I do. So, this month, my notes from the classroom is all about batting. My husband, at the tender age of 71, completed them last week, celebrating at the top of the final one with Champagne. To commemorate the occasion, I made him a bed runner quilt. It has 282 triangles, including the flying geese, the landscape panels and prairie point edging at the sides. One of the landscape panels is a homage to Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’, which he loves, and the backing is in that fabric. Appliquéd acorns, blackberries and autumn leaves create a wreath around the pair. The panel is finished as a round clock using an adhesive kit by Needcraft, widely available. BEHIND THE QUILT COLOUR CRUSH “Crazy patchwork includes a variety of different techniques that I like to use in many of my wall-hangings, as they’re a great way to create contemporary work. In fact, crazy patchwork is one of the topics covered on the City & Guilds course that I teach. It wasn’t love at first sight though – when I first encountered crazy patchwork, I didn’t like it! It made me think of fussy, heavily embroidered Victorian purple velvets used to cover a table in a dark parlour.
