The International Quilt Museum, located on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has the world’s largest public-held quilt collection, dating from the early 1700s to the present day, and representing more than 60 countries – some of its items can be viewed in the ‘Collections’ area of the website. “I started this quilt with the idea of just sewing one block that I had seen in a book – 180 designs for Traditional and Original Quilt Blocks by Suzuko Koseki. The blocks in the book were quirky and fun and this seemed a straight forward one to draft into a useful size. I could use Jelly Roll scraps for the squares, cut up Charm Squares or other pre-cuts and use some scraps. “I loved the idea of a fun quilt with these blocks, and it seemed a perfect block for the month that I was Queen Bee in the group that I stitch with making donation quilts. We each choose a block when it’s our turn, and the other members stitch two blocks that will all go into one…

“This cheerful lampshade cover, with its soft blue and pastel patchwork, showcases Errol, a playful otter swimming with his friend, Simon, the Kingfisher, all sewn with free-motion embroidery. Appliquéd irises, lilies and tree branches wave about the pair. “The lampshade itself is made with a kit and is finished with a contrasting silver finish on the inside – it’s a lovely way to brighten up a room. I chose an otter as the main feature as I love the way they dance through the water and make me think of summer. I like to use scrappy fabrics for my backgrounds and the plain borders make the rolled edge of the lampshade easier to do and draw the eye in to the design.”…

Help! When making a Log Cabin Hexagon, is it a problem if the final sides aren’t the same length? Try this... If you are making a stand-alone Log Cabin Hexagon, for example a place mat, then it doesn’t really matter if all of the outer sides aren’t exactly the same as the eye won’t be able to tell the difference. If, however, you plan to sew groups of hexagons together, then it helps to have all outer sides the same, so the shapes will fit together. If you have checked the measurements as you added each round, then the maths should be pretty good and a small difference, perhaps ⅛in or so, can be accommodated. Her Majesty’s wardrobe Still being cautious about going out has given me extra time to sit and sew. This year, as you will know, we will be celebrating Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, with a long weekend of celebrations planned for June! I was 8 when the Queen was crowned, and we were lucky enough to have a TV which allowed us to see the Coronation service. It was a very cold day and, even then, I wondered if the Queen was keeping warm, particularly in the drive from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. For straight line appliqué, Irene draws her shapes with either a pencil or a permanent pen. She then presses all seam allowances using an iron. The shapes are then ready to be glued onto the background fabric. Irene suggests, if you don’t have a ⅛in bias maker, use a ¼in stem already made, cut off one seam allowance. In recent years, the contribution of African American arts to America’s visual culture has begun to receive the recognition it deserves. As well as paintings, woodcarvings, basket weaving and pottery, artforms also include textiles such as quilts. African American quilts vary hugely in their compositions, but common features include: the use of strips; unpredictable geometry, such as asymmetry and changing scales; improvisation; and bright colours.
