With the world looking at how to be more environmentally conscious, be it recycling, using alternate fuel sources or cutting down on meat consumption, I feel the quilting community has always embraced the motto “make do and mend”. I mean, who doesn’t love a good scrap quilt? Not only does it allow you to use up fabrics in your stash, but these quilts always look so charming with their mixture of colours and patterns. Tell us about your background/how you got into craft and quilting specifically? I’ve always been obsessed with crafts! As a young child, I used to spend hours and hours making scrapbooks, cards, decorations and gifts – and I’ve never grown out of it! I still have that childlike love of making things (although hopefully my skills have improved a little…). I got my very first sewing machine when I was about 17, and it quite literally changed my life. I felt like I had a superpower, it was amazing! “The Double Wedding Ring Quilt pattern is one of the great traditional designs and is usually made using multiple Y-seams where the leaf shapes and the large, curved edge square shapes meet the circle segments. This makes it a very difficult and advanced design to piece successfully. In this version, we have eliminated all the Y-seams. The curved sections are pieced on foundation paper piecing templates. Since the fabric pieces are all pre-cut for these templates, this speeds up the process and makes it harder to make foundation paper piecing mistakes. These are then sewn to one inner and one outer piece, and those curved seams are quite gentle, again making the process relatively straightforward. Nicola Dodd started her quilting adventures after happening upon a quilt blog in 2010. Having drawn and designed all her working life, first as a conservation architect and then a garden designer, it wasn’t long before she started creating her own quilt patterns. Andrea tackled her first quilt when she was 16 – after years of dressmaking, the requirement for accurate seams and actually using pins nearly put her off, but she discovered she enjoyed hand quilting, and later turned to hand appliqué. “I love medallion quilt settings with appliqué blocks used for the centre and I often surround them with pieced blocks. For this quilt, I wanted to extend the centre appliqué design out to the sides. As the appliqué design radiates out from the centre, I wanted the pieced blocks to also flow out from the centre. “The fabrics I have used are a collection called ‘Farmers Daughter’, designed by Pam Buda under her design name of Heartspun Quilts for Marcus Fabrics. The name of the collection makes me think of beautiful cream farmhouses with lots of red, blue and pink flowers growing in the garden around it. Regular readers will be familiar with Nicola Dodd’s gorgeous one-of-a-kind quilts. Their quintessentially British aesthetic is perhaps not a surprise given Nicola’s background in conservation architecture and garden design. Maybe what is more surprising is that quilting only came into her life around a decade ago.
