Just like that, it’s July! Six months of the year have gone past in a blink of an eye, and I can’t quite believe it. July to me means sunny days spent outdoors with family and friends (fingers crossed we don’t go back into lockdown). There’s also the growing excitement of The Festival of Quilts being just around the corner. As it stands, the show is going on, and I am starting to get excited about seeing all the wonderful contributors from the mag. It’s so lovely to meet some of them in person for the first time. “I love four-block quilts, but wanted to design something a little out of the box. After designing the blocks with the daisy in the centre, I decided to add more daisies and extend them into the border. I love a leafy vine border with lots of different coloured leaves and try and incorporate them into my quilts where I can. Another point of interest I love in this quilt is the scallop border – another favourite quilting style – they change the look of a quilt into something so much sweeter!” –…

“Tumbling Block quilt designs are one of the all-time classic, traditional quilt designs. The base pattern is made of one shape – two equilateral triangles joined together to make a 60° diamond. Three of those pieced together make one hexagon shape, and those hexagons are all tessellated together to make the overall design. The use of three main shades within each block gives the 3D “block” effect. Traditionally, these quilts would have been English Paper Pieced – all hand sewn and probably also hand quilted. In this version, I have split one of the diamonds into two equilateral triangles and those are pieced together to make the top of each block. In that way, the whole quilt top can be pieced in strips with no tricky Y seams. It’s worth…

“For this design, I have chosen five different flower blocks in different sizes and formations to create a row quilt that displays a variety of different skills. The most complicated blocks in this quilt can be found in the second row and are made using a combination of foundation paper piecing and partial seams, so you might want to start with the other blocks first. “Most of the blocks use HST units as some of their components, which are made using templates that enable you to make eight units in one go, so no time-consuming trimming! For each block, I have used one red print, one pink print and one green print for consistency, but you could make the quilt much scrappier and mix the prints up a lot more.”…

■ By using lightweight, sew-in interfacing, you can sew the circles quickly on the sewing machine. The interfacing can be left in place and this will not affect the quilt or your quilting in any way. Allow one (1) 3½in square of interfacing for each circle. ■ Draw around template C on the interfacing. ■ Put the interfacing on the RS of the fabric and, with the sewing machine, stitch all the way round the circle on the drawn line. ■ Cut the circle out adding a scant ¼in seam allowance. ■ Make a slit in the centre of the interfacing and turn the circle RS out. This stunning triangle patchwork frame quilt is an impressive example of a vibrantly coloured printed cotton patchwork with a beautiful hand-quilted design. The central block printed commemorative panel, which celebrates the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, is one of several designs that were popular in the 1810s and 20s. There are 844 triangles in this piece, which showcase 252 different fabrics dating from the 1820s and 1830s. In the centre of the quilt, the intricate framed hand-quilted design reveals a quilted date – 1834 – which only becomes apparent when you examine the plain Irish linen backing fabric. For as long as she can remember, Dutch quilter, Petra Prins, has adored fabrics. An enduring favourite is Liberty’s Tana Lawn cottons. “The colourful, vibrant prints are fabulous, and the cloth is amazingly soft and silky to touch. I also love the heritage and stories behind the designs. I don’t think I will ever get bored of them,” Petra tells us. Inevitably, from her love of fabric came a love of sewing. In fact, in 1990 Petra opened her first shop in the village of Brummen in the eastern Netherlands. Here, she made women’s clothes to order using fabrics such as silks and Liberty prints.
