Two of the earliest dated patchwork coverlets, the 1718 Silk Patchwork Coverlet, part of The Quilters’ Guild Collection here in the UK, and the 1726 Quilt from Norwich, part of the collection of the McCord Museum in Montreal, Canada, feature distinctive eight-point stars at their centre. In America, pieced and appliquéd stars are arguably one of the most popular block designs, and a quick glance through any block bible will reveal a great number of variations – Lone, Feathered, Christmas, Kansas, LeMoyne, Ohio and let’s not forget Missouri – just to name a few. ‘Star quilts’ are also one of the most popular designs used by Native American quilters who, having learnt quilt making from outside communities, have infused this tradition with their own cultural meaning.
