Sew much love Here is a quilt I made after my daughter suggested that she would like me to make a ‘memory’ quilt from her son and daughter’s small clothes now that they are growing up fast! Your magazine pointed me towards a book called Modern Memory Quilts by Suzanne Paquette. My daughter was very taken by a design in that book and this is the result! “I call this quilt the Amish Medallion Sampler as it combines various elements into one quilt. The use of solids against a black background give the quilt an Amish feel, although a traditional Amish quilt might have stuck to more earthy tones in the colours used against the black. I have called it a sampler because it contains a number of different elements within the quilt – a Lone Star, a circle of triangles, a Dresden Plate block, a flower block and half-square triangles in the corners. ‘Pictorial’ simply means to express something in the form of a picture. So a pictorial quilt is generally considered to be an illustrative work. Of course, as with all genres, there is a degree of subjectivity. So, if you are entering a quilt into a pictorial competition, you will need to check the rules carefully for that particular event. Lynette Warren was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was here that her love for quilting began. Lynette began quilting in 1996, shortly before her move to Georgia the same year. It was there, her love developed into a passion. She is an avid quilter and has been shown across the United States. Lynette has competed locally in quilt shows and has won several awards for her handwork. Lynette classifies herself as a traditional quilter and works exclusively by hand. “French braid piecing is not only easy to do, but also creates striking effects. This month, we look at the basic method and some of the variations.”– Lin Clements WHAT IS FRENCH BRAID PIECING? French braid piecing is an easy and effective form of patchwork, sometimes called friendship braid. Its main characteristic is the herringbone pattern created, reminiscent of parquet flooring. The braid ‘runs’ that are created can be even more impactful with careful colour selection. Quilts made with this technique are straightforward to put together, and usually produce dramatic results.
