As we slowly emerge from our enforced springtime hibernation, I have been taking stock of the last few months and trying to hang on to the positive aspects. One of these has been a renewed connection with nature, which I know many have felt during the months of lockdown. The decrease in artificial noise has made us more aware of natural sounds such as bird song and, with little other distractions, many of us have been paying more attention to the flowers, trees and insects that surround us in our parks and gardens. Sally Ablett has been happily making quilts for nearly 30 years. During this time, patchwork has developed from a hobby into Sally’s full-time job. As a child, Bari J’s mother would paint and craft, so it was only a natural progression that she’d inherit her love of crafting. She began crafting and creating jewellery, but when she first learnt to sew she knew she had found her passion. She was hooked on it. Here are two wildflower examples to help explain how you can use natural subjects to design viable quilt patterns. Poppy Seed Head Wild poppies grow at the verges on my regular run and I enjoy observing them in all their stages of development – from flower buds through to the dried ‘pepper pot’ seed heads. At the time of writing, the seed heads are still at this unripe stage, which is equally appealing. The symmetry of this shape made it perfect for a quilt block. I started with a simple sketch and then drew up and coloured the block using EQ8 software. I think this could be made using EPP templates, or perhaps a combination of curved piecing and FPP. Stuffed quilting is also called trapunto, which is derived from the Italian word for quilt, trapunta. Stuffed quilting is a decorative technique worked on two layers of fabric – much like corded quilting – and creates a raised, puffy look on the surface of the work. It combines well with corded quilting. Traditionally, it was worked on white fabric, although in this article you will see other colours and subtle prints used as well. This quilt is a celebration of our autumnal home, when blackberries are ripe and ready to be picked, and anemones bloom. Help! I would like to try stuffed quilting, but I don’t have the time for the complex pieces I’ve seen at shows. Is there an easy way to try? Try this… Sure! In quilting, there’s always a way to have a go. Producing several samples for this Essential Guide meant that I had to scale back my ambitions, as there’s no getting away from the fact that stuffed work takes time and effort. Most of the designs I’ve included this month could be used as small blocks within other patchwork blocks. The star sample shown in Fig 7A is just an easy nine-patch arrangement, but the trapunto stars add extra interest. You could do a similar thing with the quadruple heart design, combining it with another patchwork block, as shown…

1 Decide on the finished width of the border, cutting the strips with an extra ½in to allow for fabric lost in seam allowances. 2 To calculate the unfinished (cut) length of the border, allow an extra amount at each end that is at least the width of the border, to allow for the mitres (Fig 7).
