All of these are true for Deputy Editor, Laura, who has been a huge fan – and fabric collector – of Anna Maria for years now. “This is a lovely project to sew when you have a few moments to stitch a block, plus, you can use up those fabric treasures by dipping into your scrap bag. This is a true scrappy quilt, with the strips measuring just 1in finished. It might look like it will take a long time to stitch, but it actually makes a really quick stitch when you sew the strips to the backing and wadding at the same time as constructing the block. Turning a perfect circle can be difficult with hand appliqué. An easy method for turning the circles is to use a piece of cardstock or a Mylar template and aluminium foil. 1 Cut a cardstock or Mylar circle to the size you want the finished circle to be. Trace the circle onto the back of the fabric using a pencil and cut the circle out a generous ¼in outside the traced line. Cut a piece of foil larger than both circles. It does not have to be a perfect circle – a rough shape will do. 2 Place the foil, shiny side down, on the ironing board first, then the fabric circle right side down, then the cardstock or Mylar circle on top, aligning with the circle you traced. “This quilt is made entirely with half-square triangles. The sets of HSTs in the corners are made in batches of 12 using paper templates, which avoid the need for time-consuming trimming. The rest aren’t traditional HST units, but are fabric squares cut in half and sewn either side of a square to give the look of HSTs. The quilt is made using a Moda Fat Quarters bundle with the fabrics divided into colour groups for different elements of the quilt (Fig 1). Acid-free tissue paper is widely available from art suppliers and online. Replace tissue when it starts to yellow. Archival storage boxes can be purchased from a number of conservation product suppliers – try to obtain boxes that are acid-free. When covering worn or damaged areas, use conservation-grade monofilament net. This isn’t widely available, but it can be bought from websites such as www.restore-products.co.uk – they also stock very fine threads, which should be used to hand-stitch the net in place. Help! When you need to add spacer pieces to a band, how do you decide what width they should be? Try this… If the spacers are to be used simply to make the band longer by an unspecified length, then the width of the spacer is personal choice. I often choose a width that already occurs in the block, which then creates a balanced look. Fig 12 shows spacers that are the same width as the narrow segment in the block. If the band has to be a specific length, then subtract the length of the band by the final length needed. This will show you how much extra needs to be added - see Fig 13A. 1 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of four (4) Fabric I 3⅞in squares. Lay two (2) of the Fabric I squares RST on a 7¼in coloured fabric square (B, C, D, F or G) (Fig 1A). 1 Lay a piece of fusible web (paper side up) over the whale templates (which have been reversed) and trace each piece separately. I have been following her career since the very start when my own quilting journey began. It was her signature rich colours and intricate prints that had me spellbound then and continue to delight me 15 years later, and I’m not the only one – it was unanimous in the office when we decided to create a supplement celebrating her work! Lush knits One of Sandie Lush’s innovative sweater quilts has been acquired by The Quilters’ Guild for their permanent collection. This piece was the first in a series of themed quilts created by Sandie exploring knitted designs and textures. ‘Slip 1, Knit 1’ was made by Sandie for The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles’ 7th National juried exhibition in 1999, held at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Of course, the location, the theme ‘Under the Covers’ and Sandie’s love of knitting all came together in this realistic-looking quilted cricket sweater. Use a specific rotary cutter or blade for trimming through all three layers so as not to dull the one you use for cutting fabric. Use the extension table on the sewing machine to keep the work flat as you stitch and use a slightly longer stitch than normal on the machine for ease of stitching. The work tends to twist slightly as you stitch, this will rectify itself when you square up the block. If you are worried about the block size, cut wider strips for the outside round. There are various appliqué techniques, but my favourite is my needle-turn method, described below. Whatever method you choose, complete all the appliqué before you piece the blocks together, unless otherwise instructed. If you wish to machine-appliqué your quilt, remove the seam allowance from around each shape before you cut it out. 1 Using a sharp 2B pencil, trace the template shapes onto template plastic or cardstock. Using paper scissors (not your fabric scissors), cut along the traced line. 2 Place the template on the right side of the fabric and trace around it, taking care to leave space between the pieces for a seam allowance. 1 Keep quilts free of dust, dirt and pet hairs by vacuuming them occasionally. Use the cleaner’s lowest suction setting and an upholstery attachment with a piece of net or muslin secured over the tool’s head. 2 If possible, avoid washing. If you do risk it, machine wash on a wool cycle, but don’t use detergent. Never wash fragile quilts, and check dark fabrics for colourfastness. In theory, dry flat, but over a washing line on a sunny day might be more feasible. 3 If you decide to dry clean your quilt, use a specialist textile cleaner or conservator – commercial dry cleaning is too harsh. 4 Store quilts where light levels are low, the temperature is cool and even, and humidity is moderate and constant. Give your stitches a little tug each time, loose stitches will show more, but be careful not to pull too hard and pucker them. Keep a small moist sponge beside you for wetting your needle (safer than licking!). A wet needle will give you extra purchase on the fabric when turning the edges under, it’s especially useful when tackling inner curves.
