Puppy patchwork This is my version of the Damask Rose quilt from in issue 37. I love Pam and Nicky Lintott’s quilt patterns and I was inspired to try this one first as I fell in love with the design and the beautiful colours of the fabric. I bought a French General Jelly Roll, added some similarly coloured Fat Quarters and away I went. I had some tuition on a long-arm quilter and then quilted using the pantograph. After attaching the binding, I was extremely pleased with the result. I made the quilt to put on the back of the sofa to protect it from the dog, but now the problem is keeping the dog off my lovely new quilt. 1 Line up your ruler on your fabric strip with the 60-degree marked line along the top or bottom edge. Make the first cut to angle the edge (cuts indicated by red lines in diagrams). Discard this small offcut of fabric, (Fig 1A). 2 Adjust the ruler to the appropriate width measurement, in this example it is 6½in, and align this with the angled edge, keeping the 60-degree marking aligned with the straight side. HELP! I often get confused about which colour fabric goes where on a template, especially once the template has been reversed. Is it just me? Try this… No, it’s not just you. I have a feeling that people who get their right and left mixed up easily find FPP a bit of a struggle – I confess that I do. There is a process to the technique that needs discipline to follow it, so it pays to make sewing easier whenever you can. One really useful thing to do is to colour in your master template when you know what fabrics you are going to be using. Just use felt tips or coloured pencils to scribble a general idea. The Regency Blues collection will always have a special place in the story of the Antique Textiles Company as it’s the first range to have come about from the collaboration with Moda. Launched earlier this year, the Regency Blues collection was inspired by an early 19th Century Quilt, mainly comprised of 18th century fabrics. He felt an instant connection with this quilt, which was a relatively recent discovery in his long career buying and selling antique quilts. He purchased it in 2016 in Bedfordshire, England, from a lady whose great grandmother had been given the quilt while living in Sussex several generations ago. With over 267 different fabrics mainly dating from 1770 to circa 1805 in the quilt, it’s easy to see why this was such a fantastic design resource.…

It you feel intimidated by the notion of a sketchbook, think of it as a workbook. It’s for your personal reference; it doesn’t have to be a work of art. Get a good grounding in basic methods and then start playing with pushing them to their limits. If there’s a particular technique you’d like to know about, take a course – it might really open things up for you. If there isn’t a nearby class, look online or use a book. Good workmanship shows, so it’s a worthwhile investment of your time to pay attention to detail. Have confidence in what you’re doing and don’t undermine yourself by being self-deprecating. The first time I walked into the Antique Textiles Company in London, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Every wall, chair and cupboard was bursting with the most beautiful quilts you could imagine. The second collection with Moda is inspired by one of Christopher’s favourite quilts, a unique 18th century Irish chintz patchwork quilt that he named Ballycastle, as it was purchased from a large country house in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland. The quilt dates from 1780-1790 and each print in this collection has been lovingly reproduced to capture the detail and style of this textile treasure. Each print is named after a city or castle from Ireland – Limavady, Ballykelly, Fintona, Grey Abbey, Cushendall, Maghera – and the colours are based on what they once would have been. Ballycastle is a small town in County Antrim and the word “bally” is derived from the common Gaelic phrase “town of”. The full name Baile an Chaistil, therefore means “town of the castle”. “Dark star-lit nights, crackling bonfires and cosy knitwear were the inspiration behind this quilt, particularly the harlequin diamonds and Argyle patterns that are often found in knitted jumpers and socks! Molly, our production editor, told me the pattern reminded her of the Joker in a pack of cards, which is a comparison that really made me smile. It brought back memories of ski holidays and card games played after an active day on the pistes. I love high-contrast quilts and the dark inky blue background was the ideal choice to evoke moody evenings, all while enabling the stars and diamonds to sparkle. I chose a small stippling quilting design to give the quilt an almost ‘woolly’ texture, which will be lovely and crinkly once washed and dried. I’m now ready…

I feel so lucky to have attended the Festival of Quilts at the NEC this August, where I was privileged to see the most wonderful array of truly remarkable quilts in all shapes and sizes. The collaboration between the team at Moda and the Antique Textiles Company is a marriage made in heaven.
