The Criminal Quilts project is the creation of artist Ruth Singer, and is formed around a collection of nine albums of photographs along with documents that are part of Staffordshire Record Office’s archive. Within the albums’ pages are beguiling mugshots of around 500 female criminals, taken between 1877 and 1916, providing rare snapshots of working class women who might otherwise have never been photographed at all. Ruth’s attraction to these images began in 2012, when she was commissioned by the (now closed) Shire Hall Gallery in Stafford to make a series of pieces inspired by photographs of female criminals that were displayed in their historic courtroom. The Spectacular lone star block has long been a favourite with quilters and this month we show how it can be made with strip piecing LONE STAR The Lone Star block is an eight-point star design. It is perennially popular and has many names, as you might expect for a design that is an old but beloved favourite - Star of Hope, Stars Upon Stars, Harvest Sun, Virginia Star, Sunburst Star - the list goes on. The block makes a wonderful centrepiece for a quilt, especially a medallion quilt. It’s also a good block for practising various patchwork skills, both basic and more adventurous. HELP! Getting my seams to match up on the pieced diamonds is difficult. Any tips? Try this… Aligning seams is tricky because when the diamond rows are joined together the seams are slanted and offset compared to normal. A tip I’ve given before is to place pins horizontally, following the proposed sewing line, which means you can open up the units before sewing to check the seams will meet smoothly. Sew slowly and remove the pins one by one at the last moment, before the machine reaches them. HELP! I get in a muddle with all the different seams. I have long been wowed by the beauty and skills it takes to create Baltimore Album Quilts. Patience and time are a necessity, and technique is vital. So I was delighted to get the chance to work with Shirley Bloomfield on this supplement. Shirley has taken this traditional style and given it a fresh look with a British twist, all inspired by her English cottage garden. Adding dimensional flowers such as foxgloves, roses and water lilies, plus wildlife to her signature designs, she has won over quilters both locally and abroad. There are several techniques that can be used for appliqué – some by hand and some by machine. Needle-turned appliqué is my favourite technique for hand appliqué, as it works well for any shape however intricate, and gives the flexibility to shape the edges into smooth curves and sharp points as you stitch. Like all skills though, it does require a little practise to master, but using the right tools and fabrics makes it a lot easier. So here are some tips to get you started as well as step-by-step instructions for learning the basic techniques. These techniques will get you started with needle-turned hand appliqué – but there is more to learn as your skills develop. The Baltimore Sampler is designed around three classic Baltimore Album shapes – the circle, wreath and lyre. As a “sampler” it includes a number of needle-turned hand appliqué techniques to give you an opportunity to learn and practise new skills. The quilt reflects my signature style of Baltimore with an English Twist, which gives a fresh look to this traditional style of appliqué. Unlike the makers of the original 19th century Baltimore Album Quilts, today’s quilters can choose from an amazing selection of printed fabrics. You will need • Dark green – one (1) 18in x ¾in bias strip • Medium green fabrics • Shaded pink/green (or colour of choice for roses and buds) • Scraps of batting 1 Trace the outer line only of the appliquéd stems, taping fabric over design as in Clematis Wreath Step 5. Note the stem does not continue all the way under the roses. The small embroidered stems can be drawn on later freehand. Main stems 2 Fold the bias strip in half, wrong sides together, and finger-press. Place the strip over the left-hand stem, with the folded edge of the strip against the drawn line – the raw edges will be facing the centre. Blocks 1 Press the blocks. Trim the blocks to an accurate 13¾in square. I trimmed the blocks further as follows in order to set them closer together. However, if you would like to have them more spaced out just trim the blocks to an accurate square and adjust the length of the borders to fit. Iris block – trim lower edge 1¼in. 1 Use the template to cut shapes from fabric strips. The height of the strips needs to be the same as the height of the template (including seam allowances), as shown in Fig 5A. Mark the template along the fabric and then cut out the shapes with a rotary cutter and ruler. 2 Pin two diamonds right sides together and with the points offset by ¼in at each end (Fig 5B). Sew the seam and press open, making sure the edges are nicely aligned, with no steps (Fig 5C). 3 Add the next diamond in the same way (Fig 5D), and so on, changing to a different fabric when necessary (Fig 5E). “This quilt was inspired by a smaller sample I made while working on a book for Search Press called Twenty to Stitch: One-Patch Quilts. The idea that patchwork quilts need only one shape to be cut and sewn to create a multitude of designs is an old one, but one that today is easily overlooked. In exploring the 20 shapes that I chose for the book, this one, the house shape, caught my imagination. It can be put together in a number of tessellating designs, but the simplicity of the rows of actual houses caught me. “This design came from playing around with the classic Log Cabin block. I wanted to place the Log Cabin on point, but square them up to get the effect that highlighting the central ‘cross’ section of the square gives. It’s constructed by piecing each quarter separately and then combining and trimming. The longest piece in each quarter of each of the nine blocks is kept the same to give some consistency to the block. If you look closely you can see that each block is made up of two colour stories, giving each block some uniformity but having an overall scrappy feel; Colour A being the longest length and Colour B the shorter side.”…

Don’t be hidebound by rules. Think about what it is you want to achieve and then consider which materials and techniques will best enable you to do that. Don’t overlook less traditional fabrics as they may give you the effect you’re seeking. Ruth prefers to work with natural fabrics of all types, not just quilting cottons, as fine silks or even heavy linen can be useful – but if a synthetic works she’ll use it. Vintage fabrics can add a wonderful richness. You may find these in antique shops, but a favourite hunting ground for Ruth is the Textile Society’s spring Manchester Antique & Vintage Fair. Care with pressing is needed at all stages of making a Lone Star block. Some of the edges will be on the straight grain but others will be bias, so it is very easy to stretch or distort the units. I find this is particularly so when sewing individual diamonds together. When a pieced diamond section is sewn together, place it on your cutting mat to check that it is forming a true diamond, positioning the 45-degree edge of the unit against the 45-degree line on the ruler (see Fig 6). This will show roughly any problem areas and where you need to press to coax the shape back. If the distortion is more acute then you may need to “block” the shape - see Troubleshooting, page 76. Many years ago a neighbour passed on her late mother’s sewing box to me and it contained a wealth of vintage haberdashery, from wooden spools and needle packs to latch hook tools and thimbles. I especially love the beautifully designed packets of “celebrated” Flora MacDonald carpet needles. It’s a reminder of a time when we mended everything, even hosiery! Since then I’ve had my eye out for vintage notions and the items that were made with them. I love embroidered linens and have a large collection, but this embroidered Radio Times cover is a particular favourite. I find the idea that people made these quite adorable.
