What’s so interesting about the Mariner’s Compass Coverlet is that there is so much information about its provenance. It is one of five pieces in the Collection from the Dennis/Cann family from Devonshire, England, which includes the Silk Triangles Coverlet, Double sided Cot Quilt, Squares Re-covered Cot Quilt, and Diamond Mosaic Coverlet. Mary, a farmer’s daughter, married Richard Cann in 1828 and they had six daughters: Annie, Jane, Elizabeth, Fanny, Mary and Margaret, and one son, John. Tragically, Richard died of Typhoid Fever in 1842, leaving Mary and her children no choice but to leave their farm and move to Hartland village where they ran a drapers and grocery shop. Mary stayed running the shop for nearly 50 years before her death at the age of 92 in 1891.…
