November holds a special place in my heart; it’s not only my birthday month (21 again, of course!) but it also heralds the start of the festive season. Spending quality time with loved ones is my priority in November and December. The British weather means that we spend much of this time either outdoors wrapped up in hats, gloves and scarves (when yarn wranglers get to show off their handiwork!) or indoors where we quilters shine. I have quilts on armchairs, on the bed and one or two smaller ones displayed on walls. Some are made by me, some by fellow-quilters, but all are positioned to create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. This month’s block is a very literal take on the flying geese pattern. As quilters we are so used to thinking of these as triangle units that it is easy to forget that they are supposed to depict geese flying overhead and their “V” flight formations. In autumn and winter the geese do indeed fly over Shangri La Farm and they make a lot of noise as they go. If there is such a thing as a geese highway then we must be right below it! These are Greylag Geese that come mainly from Iceland to “winter” in Scotland where they roost on lochs and estuaries, such as the nearby Inner Forth. “At my Christmas fair last year a friend brought a lovely old quilt that she had found in a house clearance, it is dated and signed Mary Smyth, December 8th 1832. Donna, the friend, thought it had been made in Parracombe, North Devon. I have since looked on ancestry sites but can’t confirm the information. I love North Devon and Exmoor and the quilt immediately appealed to me, although it is quite worn I love to think about all the old fabrics and quilting designs. Wool wadding has been used for hand quilting, probably hand picked off the hedges. Some years ago I was asked to write about the burgeoning craft of patchwork and quilting for a national magazine for “oldies”. They also wanted a list of tips for beginners, so I did this one. I think it’s still very relevant, so here it is again, presented for a new audience or for those of you who missed it first time around. 1 Find a quilt group Most areas have groups that meet regularly to talk about the craft, share ideas, have lectures etc. Quilters are always so friendly that this is the best way to get started. 2 Find a quilt shop Employees of quilt shops are true enthusiasts. When did you start machine quilting and how did you learn? “I started straight-line machine quilting in the late 70s when I bought my first machine. Quilted garments were in fashion so over a few years I made several waistcoats and jackets. I started free-motion quilting in the mid-1980s after discovering Harriet Hargrave’s book Heirloom Machine Quilting. Using the darning foot, I tried meandering ‘vermicelli’ quilting, which was in vogue at the time, but I quickly got bored with it. So I began to develop my own vocabulary of lines.
