More than two children are killed every day, on average, in the conflict in Ukraine. Four more are injured. After over 100 days of war, almost two-thirds of Ukrainian children have been displaced. Conflict exposes the vulnerability of children, and greatly increases it. Beyond the physical harm, which is to say beyond the injuries that can be seen, there is the trauma. I think Twitter has been a net positive because it brings people together. From the first instant our eyes alight on a TV or phone screen, we are inundated with a curated set of images that (supposedly) depict the world around us. These images often show people of color through a stereotypical lens, and these stereotypes bleed into our everyday lives. Across dozens of studies featuring thousands of participants, I have found that stereotypes leak into conversations, even when we try to avoid them. In one test, I predicted that white Americans who want to connect across racial divides—white liberals—would use language that attempted to reverse the stereotype that they are more competent than Black and Latina/o people.
