Made just for you Here’s a card I made using a dahlia chart by Amanda Gregory from issue 216 (June 2014). I had lots of fun stitching it and adding my own embellishments. There are lots of people I know with big birthdays this year, so I also stitched this design from Faby Reilly’s butterfly stitch masterclass from issue 298 (October 2020). My friend loves butterflies and the colour blue, so it was perfect for her upcoming big birthday. How did you begin cross stitching? Crafting was really big in my family growing up. There were always beads and thread and fabric and yarn everywhere! I started embroidering onto dishcloths and quilt blocks about the same time I started primary school. I remember not liking cross stitch when I first tried it as a child because I felt like it was too slow to show progress. Cross stitch Each coloured square on the chart represents a whole cross stitch. Bring the needle up at the bottom left corner of a square and down at the top right corner. Then, bring the needle up at the bottom right corner and down at the top left to complete a stitch (starting corner positions can be reversed if preferred). Half cross stitch Half cross stitch is identified with a different symbol on the chart and key to the cross stitches, and consists of one arm of the stitch only.
