Star Letter HAPPINESS CAPTURED I thought you might be interested in the photo stitches I completed for my three children, James, Victoria and Jonathan. James married Lorena in Valencia (Lorena’s home city) in July 2012 and Jon got married to Gemma (who was born in South Africa) in September 2012. Victoria married Mounim (who is Moroccan) in July last year. As you can see, I have quite an international family! Here is my finished elephant cross stitch from issue 319 (May 2022). My daughter, Amanda, got me into cross stitching at the start of the pandemic. The minute I saw the elephant, I just knew I had to stitch it to hang in my craft room. I worked on it for about six weeks, stitching every night and at weekends. This is my largest ever finished cross stitch project. It is called ‘Jesus Shepherding’ by Happy Forever and is 78x61cm (31x24in) in size. Hidden away among the hilltops you might just stumble upon the cutest little wool shop like Gail’s sweet store. Of course, you can’t possibly resist popping inside to stock up on some supplies! Q What is better: a kit or separate patterns? fabi_and_treasures, via Instagram A Hannah F: This is a personal choice, and there are advantages to both. Kits come with everything you need to get stitching straight away, while individual patterns allow flexibility to kit up the materials yourself – meaning you can swap fabric type or colour, or even thread shades if you wish. If you have a lot of crafting stash at home, then kits may be an unnecessary expense as you’ll probably duplicate items. But, if you like a particular kit design and it’s not available as a chart, then it may be your only option. You can enjoy both!…

Q What is your method for using double-tipped needles? I’d not heard of them before but saw them mentioned in a recent issue of yours. Out of curiosity, I purchased some but they didn’t come with instructions. I’d like to try them as it sounds like they’d be good for helping to get quicker at stitching. I’ve just completed the wizard portrait from issue 323 (Sep 2022). I really loved how it looked against the marbled fabric, but I decided to stitch it on 14-count aida instead of evenweave. The metallic threads really make it pop! I loved stitching it and can’t wait to get it up on my wall at home. I thought I would share this cross stitch with you all. Both me and my hubby have had a few Landys over the years and thought it would be great to have a picture of one on our wall. Q Can you advise where I can buy cards for cross stitch projects with 7x7in or 6x6in apertures please? I have blank cards but don’t like the idea of just sticking stitching on top of the card. Carole Borman, via Facebook A Heather: You may struggle to find pre-made cards with apertures this big, and bear in mind the added border around the aperture will make the card very large overall, too. Manufacturers are limited by cardstock size for producing tri-fold aperture cards (where there’s an extra flap of card to cover the back of the aperture). Q I’ve always wondered, what does the 3-or 4-digit number in brackets mean after some fabrics on your Shopping Lists? DMC Light Effects With 36 colours in the range, you’ll find everything from a subtle sparkly sheen to rich twinkling colours to choose from. This six-stranded 100% polyester thread comes similarly packaged to the DMC stranded cotton skein, with 8m of thread that’s easily divisible into its single strands or used together for chunkier stitches. Tell us how you began designing… Quite a few years ago, I was out of work for a little while and found I was spending more and more of my free time drawing, sewing and designing cross stitch, needlepoint and embroidery items. DAZZLING BEAUTY This project from issue 304 (March 2021) caught my eye but, first I wanted to think about how to address Maria Diaz’s challenge of adding personalisation to her versatile design. It was the shoes that determined who this would be for – my friend Luan who loves stylish shoes with improbable heels! I swapped the silhouette effect for coloured hair and skin, and stitched the dress in variegated thread in shades of purple, and the shoes… those shoes… in silver. As we wait for the trumpeting heads of daffodils to appear outside the window in early springtime, here’s a design that will hasten the new season. Taking inspiration from the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century, Amanda has retained all the ornamental flourishes of that highly decorative era, along with light-filled colours and clean lines to create a modern design. If you’re an advanced beginner and want to make the leap from cards to a larger chart, then find all the hints and tips you’ll need on page 61. This large pattern is densely stitched and you’ll really feel the benefit of working on a hoop or frame, as the fabric will be taut and your stitches neater. × When using metallic threads, always cut a slightly shorter length than you would normally use. This helps to cut down on the amount of friction generated as your thread passes through the fabric, which can cause knots and tangles. × If you are using two strands, cut a single length of thread and fold it in half. Feed the looped end through the eye of the needle and then pass it over the point to secure the thread in place with a small knot. This will keep the thread attached to the needle and prevent slipping. × Use a needle one size larger than you normally would. The hole in the fabric will be made bigger by the larger eye of the needle, allowing the metallic thread to pass…

Thread colours are arranged in shade ‘families’ – these are groups of colours that create a gradient of shading. It helps to look at a shade card for the full palette when making colour comparisons (available from DMC and Anchor) as these are arranged within the shade families already. You can swap threads like-for-like to equivalent shades of another family, ie. light, medium and dark. You may want to change the hue of an entire pattern, or use up threads already in your stash to save money. You can also alter skin tones to create different ethnicities. We’ve included some examples of skin shade families below, but feel free to experiment with your own. You’ll need to select alternatives for mid-tones, highlights and shadows, depending on how many shades are…
