SINCE the operation of the first main line tour using a Class 50 in private ownership on November 1, 1997, the Class 50 Alliance (C50LA) and the Fifty Fund are approaching a century of railtours, and to celebrate their 100th charter train, Pathfinder Tours have agreed to organise ‘The Pilgrim Centurion’ excursion from Swindon to Edinburgh on September 16 – which will also be the 50th Pathfinder tour hauled by C50LA locomotives.
In the 25 years since that first tour with No. 50031 Hood, the main line fleet has been enhanced by class members Nos. 50007 Hercules, 50044 Exeter and 50049 Defiance, which have hauled charter trains over a wide range of routes, taking in much of Scotland, England, and Wales, operating both inside and outside their traditional stamping grounds.…
