Headline News THE derailment of a cement train at Petteril Bridge Junction, south of Carlisle, on the evening of October 19, resulted in two of the loaded wagons falling down an embankment, with one ending up in the River Petteril. THE Talyllyn Railway (TR), the world’s first preserved railway, has secured a £110,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) development grant award for its Talyllyn Railway: Preserving Our Past Building Our Future project, writes Cliff Thomas. The award will assist the TR in producing detailed plans for a full application seeking more than £1 million from the NLHF towards the estimated £3.5 million project to develop the railway’s Tywyn Wharf station and Tywyn Pendre sites. New works building The most significant element of the development package covers Tywyn Pendre and the adjacent ‘Orchard’ site purchased in 2019. A new engineering works will be constructed, together with carriage maintenance and storage facilities. Scottish Sleeper contract cancelled THE Scottish Government has decided to cancel the contract with Serco to run the Caledonian Sleeper services, with the agreement ending on June 25 next year. Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth said: “The proposal to rebase the franchise agreement… has been rejected on the grounds of not representing value for money to the public. “Work is under way to determine arrangements for the continued provision of Caledonian Sleeper rail services… and this will be updated to Parliament once determined.” Gilruth added, somewhat ambiguously: “It is worth noting that Serco Caledonian Sleepers Limited has, broadly, delivered well and significantly improved Caledonian Sleeper services over the last seven years.” Liverpool’s first station gets protected status EDGE Hill Engine Station, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway’s first terminus in Liverpool, has…

RCTS FOR the pre-Grouping railways, horse racing was big business. In the days before mass car ownership, the potential was considerable with a high proportion of First Class travel, and all the main line railways were out to cater for the traffic in a big way. During the time of the ‘Big Four’ railway companies, they each had famous race course names to serve. The LNER had Doncaster and Newmarket, the LMS had Aintree and Haydock Park, and the GWR served Newbury and Cheltenham. Steam & Heritage THE Heritage Railway Association (HRA) Annual Awards is set to feature five new categories for 2023 – which together with changes to several existing categories, have been designed to ensure that the awards can continue to recognise the very best work across the whole of the heritage rail sector. Headlining the changes is a new Railway of the Year category, which will be given to the railway, tramway or funicular railway that has achieved, and consistently demonstrated, excellence in visitor experience, business, safety and operations, teamwork and equality, preservation, restoration or engineering. BRITAIN’S latest new-build steam locomotive, Corris Railway’s Falcon 0-4-2ST No. 10, which is being constructed by Alan Keef Ltd, was publicly unveiled in steam at the manufacturer’s September 24 open day at Lea, near Ross-on-Wye. While still some way from being completed, the loco steamed back and forth along a short section of 2ft 3in gauge track throughout the day, having received a boiler certificate during its official steam test at the works on September 20. Work still to be undertaken before this 21st century evocation of a design dating from 1878 can enter service on the revived section of the Corris Railway includes fitting buffers, couplings and an air brake pump. MAKING the roof of Gateshead No. 10 watertight was one of the main priorities for the workshop staff at Beamish Museum during September and early October – with the added challenge of completing the work as quickly as possible. Rapid completion was required so that the scaffolding needed for the task could be returned to the hire company and the tram then lifted to carry out underframe work. Nevertheless, the museum’s assistant director of design, transport and industry Paul Jarman said that a “considerable amount of time and effort” had been expended in order to seal mounted parts to the roof and carry out repairs to cracks and the canvas before priming. AS THE economic pressure of day-to-day living begins to bite harder, until that situation eases, the number of charter trains is likely to remain reduced. Following an appraisal of the state of the market in the June issue, concern over rising costs has not gone away, and recent interest rate rises has put even more pressure on disposable income among the general population. With break-even costs now higher than ever, tour promoters are finding filling trains to a profitable point is becoming an increasingly difficult task. IN READINESS for testing and commissioning at the start of 2023, the overhead lines on the three-mile Newhaven extension of the Edinburgh Trams network are due to be switched on during November and December. Final concrete pouring and laying of the remaining track for the £207 million project was due to take place during October, with all major construction work anticipated to be completed by the end of 2022, although City of Edinburgh Council says small areas of public realm work will need to be carried out next year, citing “industry-wide challenges with the availability of materials and skilled labour impacted by Brexit and the war in Ukraine, along with significant demand for labour in the UK and overseas”. GREENBRIER Europe’s JNA-T (Ealnos) bogie box open is the most numerous wagon type in use on Britain’s railways today. Over a thousand are in service, with hundreds more on order, all built in Romania by Astra Rail Industries. The design is not totally homogenous, with variations in the number of side stanchions, either nine or eleven per side, provision of cleaning out hatches, and the placement of handbrake wheels that can be either body or bogie-mounted. Axiom LF25 or TF25 low track force bogies are fitted as required. Numerous liveries are carried, while certain owners or operators – such as Cappagh, GB Railfreight and Touax -favour ‘billboard’ style lettering. €9.5 million Metrolink Project seeks planning permission THE €9.5 billion Metrolink project which will see an underground line linking the north Dublin town of Swords, Dublin Airport, Ballymun and Glasnevin with Dublin city centre, has progressed to the next milestone. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) submitted the planning application to An Bord Pleanála on September 30. The 15 stations will serve multiple residential areas. The line will connect with the DART network at two locations – at Glasnevin on the Maynooth line where a new interchange station will be constructed – and at Tara Street in the city centre, before terminating next to the existing LUAS Green line at Charlemount. NATIONAL Highways (NH) has been given an October 2023 deadline to remove around 1540 tonnes of stone and 100 tonnes of concrete which it used to infill a bridge over a disused section of the Eden Valley route in Cumbria, writes Graeme Pickering. In June, Eden District Council rejected a retrospective planning application from NH for the changes to the structure, which carries the B6259 road over the former railway alignment at Great Musgrave. The council concluded that it resulted in “considerable harm to the visual appearance of the bridge” and that NH’s claim of reducing further costs to the public purse in the long-term by carrying out the work rather than “more sympathetic repair and reinforcement” was insufficient to outweigh the harm caused. THE restoration of Great Western Railway railcar No. 20, powered by two AEC diesel engines, is now being given a push towards completion at the Kent & East Sussex Railway (KESR) for a number of reasons, including historical significance. Following a period in storage, it was returned to Tenterden on August 31, where work has resumed. No. 20 (BR No. W20W) was an early acquisition by the KESR and provided the railway’s first passenger train from Tenterden Town station in February 1974. It has not run since 1983 but has been undergoing a protracted restoration for the past 25 years. It has now been decided the time is right to prioritise the railcar’s return to use as it can provide a ‘genuine historical experience’, but at a lower running cost…

NETWORK Rail has finished safety work to the iconic low balustrade wall at Sydney Gardens in Bath, along with the installation of railings to prevent trespassers from being able to gain access to the track. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the low profile of the wall has, over time, become a greater safety concern – and the need to protect the railway from trespassers while balancing the history and character of the structure was the challenge faced by Network Rail. The wall and other structures over the railway are Grade II* listed and the work required Listed Building Consent and the close cooperation of Bath and North East Somerset Council’s conservation officers to ensure the architecture and surrounding area were treated sympathetically and with respect, owing to the area’s designation…

THE three surviving former ‘Heathrow Connect’ Class 360/2 electric multiple units will form part of the research and development facilities at the Global Centre for Rail Excellence (GCRE). Nos. 360201/202/203 are expected to be transferred next year to GCRE at Onllwyn near Neath in South Wales having been acquired from Rail Operations Group, which bought all five members of the EMU subclass from Heathrow Airport Ltd in February 2021. ALTERNATIVE energy sources – especially battery and hydrogen power – dominated the new trains on show at the world’s largest rail trade fair, InnoTrans, which returned after a four year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Berlin in September. In all, 137,394 visitors attended this year from 131 countries (down from 161,157 in 2018); the majority international visitors. A total of 2,834 companies (down 228 versus 2018) from 56 countries (120+ from the UK) exhibited at the show which filled almost every bit of space at the Messe Berlin trade fair site. HS2 News THE first of six tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will excavate around 13 miles of twin-bore tunnels under London was launched on October 6. Named after Greenford High School teacher Sushila Hirani, who has worked for almost 30 years to inspire girls to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, TBM Sushila began its dig towards Greenford from West Ruislip. The TBM is one of a pair weighing 2,000 tonnes and measuring 140metres in length. Its counterpart Caroline, named after Caroline Herschel (credited as the first professional female astronomer) will begin work on the second of the twin bores. RM Archive 100 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 1922 Underground extension A CONTRACT has been placed by the London Underground Electric Railways for the construction of a new line between Edgware (Church Lane) and a point north of Queen’s Road, Hendon, where a connection will be made with the line now being constructed between this latter point and Golders Green. The amount of the new contract is £258,468, and provides for the construction of permanent way, steel super-structures and bridges, electrical equipment, signalling, station buildings, etc. There will be stations at Colindale, Burnt Oak and Edgware. Industrial Steam THE North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s (NYMR) September 22-25 autumn steam gala saw two ‘Lambton Tanks’ reunited for the first time in preservation. Neilson Reid 0-6-2T No. 85 was built for the Taff Vale Railway (TVR) in 1899 and worked in South Wales until being sold to the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway system, County Durham in 1929, becoming its No. 52. Restored back to TVR condition by the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, its home since 1970, the loco was hired by the NYMR for its autumn gala, where it was paired with another Lambton loco, No. 29, which is resident on the line. THE 10¼in gauge Poole Park Miniature Railway was due to be formally reopened on October 15, by Coun Tony Trent, mayor of Poole. The ceremony had been delayed from September 17, out of respect for the late Queen. Since the actual reopening on September 2, it has suffered a derailment (RM October p70) and continues to use the loco hired for construction trains – 0-6-0DH Howard (Keef 74 of 2005).
