The New Grouping Scheme AS first promulgated, the Government proposals for the grouping of railways met with very limited approval and were condemned in nearly every quarter of importance.
As an alternative, the Railway Companies’ Association produced a four-group scheme. The new proposals of the Government Bill represent in some degree a compromise between the two, by combining the Eastern with the North Eastern instead of isolating the North Eastern and Hull & Barnsley Railways into a group by themselves.
There will be four English groups: Southern (L&SW, LB&SC, SE and LC&D), Western (GW and Welsh railways), North Western and Midland (L&NW, L&Y, Midland, North Staffs, Furness and Maryport & Carlisle), and North Eastern and Eastern (GE, GC, GN, NE and H & B Railways).…
