BRITAIN’S railfreight operators have risen to the challenge of keeping the country’s supply chains working during the Covid-19 crisis.
From household goods to biomass for electricity generation, more than two million tonnes of freight per week is being transported across the country by rail.
On the West Coast Main Line (WCML), 188,000 tonnes of critical supplies are being moved every 24 hours (1.13m tonnes a week), including food, fuel and medicine. Of that total, 18,500 tonnes is destined for Scotland, which relies on rail to keep supermarkets stocked with essential products.
