ONE WOULD THINK THAT directors, actors and producers, the main profit participants on studio movies, would see it in their best interest to keep costs down, creating greater profit for themselves. Yet the rule, from what I’ve seen and heard, is that those at the top of the movie pyramid undermine their projects’ profitability through wasteful behavior. It’s sadly common to witness directors figuring out what they will be shooting when they arrive on set, with the crew standing around doing nothing; actors showing up late and/or keeping everyone waiting while they do whatever movie stars do in their luxury trailers; or producers who are rarely present and, when they are at work, acting more like Walmart greeters than stewards of the budget. WHEN HURRICANE Odile hit Mexico’s Baja peninsula in the fall of 2014, luxury resort Esperanza (where Barack Obama and Barbra Streisand have stayed) escorted 160 guests to the California border via buses. IN A BACKROOM AT PANAVISION’S WOODLAND HILLS OFFICES, ROBERT Richardson stumbled upon a Holy Grail of sorts. Quentin Tarantino had turned to the Oscar-winning cinematographer to figure out how to fulfill his dream of releasing The Hateful Eight as a 70mm movie. Richardson discovered a set of classic Ultra Panavision 70 lenses, last used for 1966’s Khartoum, that would allow him to shoot in superwide 2:76:1 ratio. “I was told those lenses no longer existed,” says Richardson, explaining that it was while he was at Panavision to meet with the company’s optical engineering vp Dan Sasaki that he discovered “these very funky-looking lenses.” Adds the cinematographer: “Quentin was extraordinarily happy because he wanted the widest format possible.” First, though, those vintage lenses required some refurbishing. “The problem was these lenses…

W ITH 2016 shaping up as the year virtual reality finally hits the home, 20th Century Fox is using CES (formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas (Jan. 6-9) to introduce a VR extravaganza based on its movie The Martian. Dubbed The Martian VR Experience, it will allow viewers to step into the shoes of astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) and explore Mars. Hollywood’s interest in virtual reality isn’t surprising; the market for VR content is expected to reach $5.4 billion by 2025, according to Piper Jaffray. But it’s still in its infancy, with such companies as Oculus and HTC expected to grab headlines at CES as they launch headsets this year. SHOWTIME’S NEW financial sector-set series Billions is being marketed as a clash of Emmy-winning titans Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. But while both male leads are sturdy, the show works best when it strays from the pair of peacocking alphas and zeros in on the woman caught between them, played by Maggie Siff (Mad Men) in what is, by far, the drama’s most interesting, complicated performance. The first six episodes, which focus on Lewis and Giamatti as two power players putting the squeeze on each other in the name of profit or justice, mostly blend into a blur of well-acted familiarity; the scenes with Siff, however, come to life.
