Parker Posey and Michael Stuhlbarg play opposing counsel in HBO Max’s limited series The Staircase, which is based on the documentary of the same name that followed the trial of Michael Peterson following the 2003 death of his wife, Kathleen. Because the trial itself was highly publicized at the time and was the focus of a docuseries from director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, Posey and Stuhlbarg say they had plenty of material to work with in preparing for their roles as prosecutor Freda Black and Peterson’s defense attorney David Rudolf. While Black died in 2018, Rudolf made himself available to both actors to help gear up for the complicated courtroom scenes. It’s not often that a small part in a film leads to the starring role in a spinoff series. Jasmine Cephas Jones was involved from the early stages of the movie Blindspotting, which co-writers and stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal developed for some 10 years before the movie premiered at Sundance and was released by Lionsgate in 2018. In a TV season packed with true-crime stories ripped from newspaper headlines, four limited series found inspiration in longform magazine articles: Hulu’s The Girl From Plainville and Pam & Tommy, Peacock’s Angelyne and Netflix’s Inventing Anna. Journalist Jesse Barron first read about the case that inspired The Girl From Plainville in the news before he spent a year reporting out the story of Michelle Carter, who was convicted in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Conrad Roy III, after it was concluded that Carter repeatedly pressured Roy to kill himself.
