Hindsight tells us that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association often employs its annual Golden Globe Awards to serve two conflicting agendas: glad-handing the starry establishment and anointing fresh talent. For every nomination that coaxes a Jennifer Lopez or a Leonardo DiCaprio to the Beverly Hilton Hotel red carpet, there are often career-making trips to the podium for artists with a fraction of the industry capital (see Gina Rodriguez, Rachel Bloom or even 2020 best comedy actor Ramy Youssef). But with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic eighty-sixing the possibility of any in-person telecast, canceling the customary schmoozing with it, awards season’s least predicable voting body could lean particularly hard on new blood for its 2021 TV selections. This show is one of those shows that everyone refers to [when talking] about the kind of show they want to make. It is such a clear thematic conversation, and no matter what character you are following, it still supports this conversation about consent and control. I also think what is so powerful about the show is how much she does not paint herself as a hero. And how fallible all the characters are. THE BOYS (AMAZON) Definitely one of the best shows on TV for fans of watching people go boom (and occasionally “pop,” “zap” or “sizzle”), The Boys is a clever show. This I don’t dispute. Its vision of a world in which superheroes are testmarketed like a new breakfast cereal and authoritarian law and order comes in formfitting spandex and capes is consistently current and sharply needling. A relative newcomer to the world of international filmmaking, Shabier Kirchner, 33, vaulted ahead of more celebrated cinematographers when the New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association recently named his work on Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series the year’s best cinematography. A native of Antigua who is mostly self-taught, Kirchner had filmed several shorts and indie features, including Skate Kitchen, (2018), about teen girl skateboarders, when he received a call from Sean Bobbitt, McQueen’s usual cinematographer who’d worked with the director on such films as Hunger and 12 Years a Slave. Bobbitt wanted to meet in London.
