Walt Disney, with its 60 million-plus subscribers for Disney+, has earned praise from Wall Street, but assessing AT&T’s and Comcast’s efforts is more challenging.
NBCUniversal’s Peacock has reached nearly 22 million sign-ups since its launch in July, the company said Oct. 29. That, along with regular usage and engagement, is well “ahead” of internal forecasts, NBCU CEO Jeff Shell told investors. Comcast has pledged to spend $2 billion on the streamer this year and next. “Subscriber metrics for Peacock were very encouraging, a clear positive,” says MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett. “Peacock is a welcome growth story here, but, as an ad-supported platform, usage will need to be followed by ad sales in real volume to fully offset the long-term declines” of linear TV.
