Lachlan Takes Jim G.’s Office The Murdochs apparently don’t like to waste empty office space. Lachlan Murdoch, 21st Century Fox executive chairman, has moved into Jim Gianopulos’ former office in Building 88 on the Fox lot. Gianopulos, the longtime chairman and CEO of Fox’s film unit, was ousted in August, and sources confirm to THR that Murdoch has taken over the digs while maintaining an office in the executive tower across the street. He likely will divide his office time to be closer to the film unit, now run by Stacey Snider. The change comes on the heels of another Murdoch exec move on the East Coast. Let’s face it: Progress toward gender equality, on TV and in the boardrooms of broadcasters, has been slow. The most recent “Boxed In” study from the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film, which looks at female talent in the U.S. industry, found that only 39 percent of all speaking characters on shows across all platforms were women and that females made up just 27 percent of all individuals working behind the scenes. For the past decade, Mel Gibson has received the cold shoulder from Hollywood. After a DUI arrest in July 2006, the Oscar-winning Braveheart director hurled statements about “f—ing Jews” at an officer. Within hours, the arrest report was leaked, and industry reaction was swift and sudden. (It didn’t help that Gibson had made disparaging comments about gays in 1991.) Whether from Wall Street, programmers, research analysts or media observers, there is virtually a daily report on the impending disruption and/or destruction of the traditional television business. The culprit: the forces of over-the-top (OTT) transmission, meaning internetenabled streaming content via boxes like Apple TV or Roku or such devices as smartphones or tablets. Among the threats, perhaps the most ominous is said to be the “skinny bundle,” or the destruction of the traditional bundle of hundreds of channels sold via a “fat” cable or satellite packages in favor of a dramatically pared down selection of desirable channels delivered (for the most part) OTT. The “sophomore slump” is a familiar problem on TV’s critical hits, often made worse when inexperienced creative teams lose control of their own shows. Now one of 2015’s breakouts, Lifetime’s UnREAL, is trying to right the ship for its third season after its second suffered from a critical backlash amid behind-the-scenes drama. UnREAL has tapped its third showrunner in as many seasons. Stacy Rukeyser, a writer-producer with the Emmy-nominated Bachelor sendup since the beginning, is known for having played the role of peacemaker between feuding co-creators Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro.
