Television Netflix doesn’t enter a genre quietly. Its first foray into scripted TV famously was a $100 million political drama from David Fincher and Kevin Spacey. One series quickly expanded to four, then 16 and now more than 30. Then it was standup, and before long that roster included Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K. Then docs (from Werner Herzog, Ava DuVernay), big-budget films (starring Brad Pitt, Will Smith) and now reality. By year’s end, Netflix’s unscripted output, which includes docusoaps, competition series and talk shows, will be in the double digits. It’s expected to explode from there. The latest signal of serious-mindedness among Hollywood collectors is creating one’s own private art gallery — at home. In 2016, producer and New York Giants owner Steve Tisch completed a 4,500-square-foot gallery (designed by the architectural firm Johnston Marklee) at his Beverly Hills estate. Covered in corrugated metal, it sits on the site of what was once a tennis court. And David Hoberman, the prolific producer behind such films as The Fighter, The Muppets and Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast, has transformed the three-car garage at his contemporary Malibu home into a white-walled box. Behind the Headlines The collapse of The Great Wall at the domestic box office (it has made $34.8 million in North America) has iced any notion of a significant future for U.S.- China co-productions. The movie likely will end up with losses of more than $75 million, sources say, and Universal Pictures will be on the hook for at least $10 million. The studio funded about 25 percent of the film’s $150 million production budget, the rest coming in equal parts from Legendary Entertainment, China Film Group and Le Vision Pictures. But Universal also covered Wall’s global marketing expenses, conservatively estimated at $80 million-plus. Disney CEO Bob Iger has told friends he’s considering their nudges that he make a run for president in 2020 as a Democrat. Any political future would hinge on Iger, 66, finding a Disney successor, of course. (Complicating matters, in February, he told financial analysts he would be “open” to remaining as CEO after his contract ends in June 2018.) He got it from a hotel that was being demolished in New York and just figured his pal Cameron needed a 700- pound stone head. It has been in my living room for 15 years. That scene in Twister where they are on the way to the big tornado — he did that all himself. In those days, we didn’t have visual effects — we had to make it real. Alongtime fan of movie musicals, Bill Condon wasn’t fazed when Disney entrusted him with turning the 1991 animated Beauty and the Beast into a $160 million liveaction movie starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens (opening March 17). But transferring the hand-drawn classic into a 3D world took nearly three years, requiring six months of R&D before preproduction even began. “There was a lot of trial and error,” he admits. J ohn Goodman is that rare character actor with more screen charisma than most leading men, moving gracefully between comedy and pathos, mischief and menace. A longtime New Orleans resident with an aversion to the Hollywood fishbowl, the 64-year-old star seems to have beamed down from an older movie era, when brawlers with crumpled faces and hard-knuckled backstories were the norm. There is great emotional delicacy in his work, too, possibly rooted in his real-life struggles with alcoholism and depression.
