The burly overlord of western Lakeland, Pillar soars over Ennerdale with a rugged grandeur. An easier ascent climbs via Black Sail Hut and Looking Stead, but for true adventure take the High Level Traverse – a labyrinthine trod that visits the imposing crag of Pillar Rock.

Jutting out of the boggy, loch-strewn flatlands of Assynt with an almost otherworldly silhouette, Suilven is a remarkably shaped mountain. It morphs as you change perspective, from gigantic dome to volcanic cone to saw-toothed spine. But, ultimately, from any angle, it’s a true Scottish icon.
