The genus Euphorbia comprises about 1700 species with an almost cosmopolitan distribution, and is well represented across South Africa, especially in the Eastern Cape. It is a member of the Euphorbiaceae or spurge family, a large group of annuals, herbs, shrubs and trees that includes the well-known Mexican garden plant, poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). All members of this genus produce a white, poisonous, latex-like sap when injured. They have unusual floral structures called cyathia, which are surrounded by several prominent bracts and are unisexual, with the female and male parts produced on separate stalks.
