Referring back to the classical styles (which we loosely mean Georgian and Regency periods) of the past, where elegant lines, symmetry and quality were core, provides a strong foundation for a sophisticated room today. In period townhouses the inspiration is unavoidable. With high ceilings, generous proportions, cornicing, sash windows and fireplaces to work with, it is hard to not give at least a nod to classical style. Of course, the look can be updated to modern tastes whilst still being sympathetic to the history of the home. Sleek lines on furniture, both sinuous and sharp angles, in polished metals add a contemporary flair. Indeed, it is textures that play the most significant role in bringing opulence, interest and tactile comfort to what can be a relatively pared-back scheme.
