Creating this edition has felt hugely momentuous. It is almost exactly 10 years ago that I joined The English Home as Editor, and I truly cannot believe that a decade has passed. So I hope you will indulge me with this little tribute to the industry I love. The world of interior design is even more diverse, energising and fast-paced than it was then – this title has expanded from a bi-monthly to a monthly magazine, our modestly sized team has grown, and every year innovations, launches and new talents continue to delight. Whether colourful or neutral, surfaces with a marble effect have an engaging sense of movement. Designs in multiple bright hues are ideal to introduce splashes of colour, whilst also neatly tying into the existing colour scheme by repeating tones seen elsewhere in the room. Groups or pairs of accessories that are decorated in a contrasting marble effect can be used to draw attention to certain areas, such as the fireplace or bedhead. PURSUITS Sloe gin: hedgerow elixir Making sloe gin is a quintessentially autumnal activity with delicious results. Sloes are wild relatives of the plum that grow on blackthorn trees. In the seventeenth century, blackthorn hedgerows were planted in England to demarcate farms and home plots, prompting a profusion of juicy sloes. Tart if eaten, steeping sloes in alcohol became a popular way to enjoy this wild harvest. Foraging for sloes to make gin is a countryside pleasure; be sure to consult a reliable book and err on the side of caution. Folklore says sloes should not be picked until the first frost, but pick them when ripe, then freeze them to emulate effects of frost. Legend suggests that sloes should be pricked by a thorn from the tree they came from…

Kate Smith of the Catto Gallery points out that, in most cases, artists are responsible for framing their own paintings, and will spend a great deal of time with the framer trying out different colours and profiles of frame before picking out the one they feel most complements the painting. “But if you are buying a painting and are not happy with the style of frame, it is perfectly reasonable to reframe in a style that fits with your home,” she says. “All framers will be able to help and advise as to a style of frame that will work with the painting. Each of our established textile companies has in its collection designs that have retained their popularity for decades, sometimes across centuries. The mystery of why some designs have such enduring appeal suggests the need to work a bit of Holmes and Poirot on their patterns in search of answers. The way we recognise designs like these as something special is an unconscious tuning into their symbolism, says textile historian Mary Schoeser. She suggests that the human urge to read symbols remains an unconscious skill. It accounts, for example, for the sustained love of floral motifs because they advance reassuring themes of growth and renewal. Sinking bare feet into a luxurious wool carpet is one of life’s simple pleasures, especially when the temperature drops outside. Soft, warm and springy to the touch, hard-wearing and easy to care for, wool can be worked into an infinite number of beautiful designs. Made from keratin – a tough, insoluble, natural protein – each wool fibre has a spiral chain structure, meaning it is strong, stretchy and supremely flexible. This quality, known as ‘crimp’, is responsible for wool’s tactile and cushioning quality, though the material has plenty of other practical benefits, too. Now that the autumn season is in full swing, boot rooms and pantries really come into their own. When choosing who to entrust with providing luxurious beds for Buckingham Palace to achieve that all-important rejuvenating night’s sleep, the entire globe’s bed-makers were at Her Majesty The Queen’s disposal. The original meandros pattern – now usually referred to as Greek key – was named after a river that curved its way through the landscape of ancient Greece. The essence of the idea is a never-ending line, symbolising infinity. Traditionally used as a decorative border, it anchors tiles and trims with a timeless ornamentation and architectural shape. When it comes to kitchen delights, there is little more evocative of the gentle drift into autumn than the perfumed aroma of a perfectly crafted apple cake drawn fresh from the oven. Britain has a particularly close relationship with wool – archeological records show that sheep have been domesticated since as far back as 10,000BC, and textile fragments suggest we were spinning and weaving wool over 7,000 years ago. A trade in this incredibly useful and versatile commodity has been an important ingredient in our country’s economy for centuries. In more recent years, the British wool market has fallen into something of a decline. Developments in synthetic textiles during the mid-twentieth century and outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, which decimated flocks in some parts of the country, caused manufacturers to turn their backs on this steadfast material in favour of the myriad new synthetic textiles such as nylon, acrylic, viscose and polyester. “Man-made textiles are now known to emit minuscule microfibres during the…
