Over the course of her long lifetime, Beth Chatto OBE VMH had a profound influence on gardeners, and today her knowledge and passion endure in the 7.5-acre garden that she created in one of the driest parts of the country. “Beth’s ethos of ‘right plant, right place’ and overall philosophy is, if anything, even more relevant today than when she started out six decades ago,” says Åsa Gregers-Warg, head gardener at the Beth Chatto Gardens. “From the outset, she had to consider the varied and challenging site conditions that informed the choice of plants she could grow.”
As a result, Chatto’s gardens at Elmstead Market in Essex are filled with happy plants thriving in the appropriate conditions: damp areas, shady woodland or sunlit glades, south-facing beds of pristine perennials mingling…
