Walk down the driveway to Hospitalfield, located just off Arbroath’s Westway, and it somehow feels that there should be another way in. And yes, 800 years ago, when pilgrims arrived here from the sea, access would have been via another entrance on the North Sea coast.
Arbroath Abbey was one in a string of French Benedictine Christian settlements that stretched from Orkney to Fife, and beyond to Holy Island, in the 12th century. This was the product of the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France at the time. With an influx of pilgrims arriving from the Continent, the resident monks decided a place was needed for them to break their journey and recover.
