MASS migration
At this time of year, bird migration is a more leisurely process, since breeding season is over and there’s no rush to arrive or depart. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spot birds heading south or arriving in the UK for winter.
Birds who seek out warmer climates in autumn include swallows, swifts, cuckoos, nightingales, house martins, redstarts and raptors. You can spot flocks of these birds making their way south from most places in the UK.
Autumn also brings visitors from northerly regions, either passing through on their way south or returning to the UK for winter. Flycatchers, chats and warblers from Scandinavia pass through earlier in the season.
