It is a short and picturesque commute from Paul Thomas’ cottage to his workshop in the village of Lane End, Buckinghamshire. He walks for two minutes across the common, often stopping to chat with a neighbour on the way, before opening up his purpose-built studio.
Inside the studio, there is a tangy smell of fresh oak, and stacks of roughly hewn boards leaning against the walls, awaiting their transformation into smooth, beautifully simple signposts, house names and letterboxes adorned with clean, crisp carved calligraphy.
