The concept of opening gardens for charity is a very successful one, as the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) proves year after year. This year the NGS has donated £2.7million to the charities it supports, such as Macmillan and Marie Curie. Its annual book, Gardens to Visit, listing participating gardens (or its website, ngs.org.uk) offers overwhelming choice, and there is always a tempting garden nearby. Fund-raising supremos run with the concept: on 9 and 10 July, work your way along the Macmillan Garden Trail, when 29 gardens along the Sussex coast open in aid of Macmillan. In Scotland, the NGS equivalent is Scotland’s Gardens, with gardens opening from Shetland to Wigtownshire. This year, the Pitmuies Gardens, near Dundee, are celebrating their 50th year of opening for the scheme.
